Have you ever stood at the edge of something great, only to hesitate? That brief moment of doubt, the overwhelming feeling that maybeโjust maybeโyou arenโt ready yet? Youโre not alone.
But hereโs what Iโve learned: Hesitation is the enemy of progress.
Joseph Campbell, the great mythologist, once said:
โThe cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.โ
That fear, that hesitation, isnโt a stop sign. Itโs a signpost pointing you toward growth. The very thing youโre resisting is likely the key to unlocking your next level.
Think of Peter in the Bible. He saw Jesus walking on water and wanted to do the same. He had the opportunityโbut for a moment, he hesitated. He let fear creep in, and the moment he took his eyes off Jesus, he started sinking (Matthew 14:28-31).
How often do we do the same? We see an opportunity, feel called toward it, and thenโdoubt. But Jesus didnโt let Peter drown. He reached out and pulled him up.
Which brings us to the question: What is the โcaveโ youโve been avoiding? What is the work youโre resisting?
Youโve probably heard this quote:
โThe magic youโre looking for is in the work youโre avoiding.โ โ Chris Williamson
Many of us avoid the uncomfortable things that will actually move us forwardโstarting that business, putting in that application, making that call, writing that book, launching that course.
Itโs not that we donโt want success. We just donโt want to feel uncomfortable getting there. But growth requires discomfort. I have that Chris Williamson quote written on the whiteboard in my home office so I can read it every day. I know myself. I know that I avoid doing things that make me uncomfortable sometimes. And you know what? The reality is, every time I grit my teeth and dig into whatever that hard thing is, it turns out to be rewarding and most of the time, not nearly as hard or scary as I thought it was going to be.
Hereโs one way to uncover whatโs holding you back: Journaling.
Journaling isnโt just writingโitโs revealing. Itโs how you bring the hidden fears, doubts, and excuses to light.
Take five minutes today and ask yourself:
God doesnโt call the equippedโHe equips the called. If He placed the vision in your heart, He will give you the strength to step forward.
