Imagine we’re sitting across from each other, sharing a warm cup of coffee and talking about life. You might recall that classic riddle: “Which weighs more, a pound of rocks or a pound of feathers?” Of course, we know they both weigh the same. But if you actually had to lug around two bags—one filled with rocks and one filled with feathers—let’s be honest, it’d feel completely different.
This playful comparison really drives home a serious point: life’s burdens are unavoidable. The way we carry them can transform our entire experience. In the following passages, Jesus shows us a better way to handle our struggles. He doesn’t remove them entirely, but teaches us to carry them with His strength and guidance.
Jesus never guaranteed a burden-free life. The Bible encourages us in Galatians 6:2, “Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.” Then in Matthew 22:39, we’re given this clear directive: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you think about it, when we help carry each other’s loads, we’re making space for God’s hand to work in both our lives and theirs.
That’s the essence of The Way of Christ—it’s all about service, generosity, and coming alongside others. Jesus highlighted a powerful principle of reciprocity in Luke 6:38 when He said, “Give, and it will be given to you.” There’s no guesswork there—no “maybe” or “sometimes.” It’s a promise that when we give, share, support, we open ourselves to receive the same.
One of the most comforting promises Jesus offers is rest for the weary. In Matthew 11:28, He invites us tenderly, “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened…” The NASB version adds the side note: “Or work to exhaustion.” If you’re feeling stretched thin—mentally, emotionally, or spiritually—believe me, you’re not the only one.
But here’s the good news: He doesn’t leave us hanging. In Matthew 11:29, He continues, “You will find rest for your souls.” That word “rest” in the original Greek points to a resting place—a sacred space where our heaviest burdens can be laid down so we can experience real, soul-deep peace.
So, how do we take on life’s burdens in the way Jesus intended? Here are three simple yet profound steps:
Lately, I’ve been jotting down these insights in my journal. It’s become a space where I ask God to help me lean on Him more, and also to show me how I can come alongside others. Even when everything feels like it’s piling up, journaling offers a moment to pause, process, and remind myself of His promises.
What about you? Are you writing down your thoughts anywhere—maybe in a journal, on your phone, or even in the margins of your Bible? I’d love to hear what’s been on your heart lately. Let’s encourage each other, share our journeys, and in doing so, help carry each other’s burdens.
